OneMinutes

Since the first "OneMinutes" workshop we gave back in 2003, as facilitators of the Amsterdam based One Minutes organisation, we have been giving many of that same format, through the OneMinutes or other organisations, to various audiences - teenagers, adults, arts students, film students, filmmakers, prisoners... and in different countries (Romania, Albania, Burundi, Israel, Palestine...)
The workshop, thematic or not, has the following basic structure:
An intensive week, where each participant makes their own 1 minute long movie. During this week the participants work in small teams and with our close guideness, and go through a complete production process, from an idea to a finished movie. The films can be of any type - fiction, documentary, animation...
The workshop concludes with a public screening of the resulted works.

The following description and specification is fitted to teenagers' workshop:

WORKSHOP BENEFITS
Through the various workshop stages the participants are introduced to the basics of film reading and film making (visual literacy), receive tools of expression and learn how to put words, images and sounds to their feelings and ideas. The clear purpose-centred process that the workshop offers, is both demanding and empowering: it involves responsibility taking, decision making, self discipline, organization skills and team work.

TUTORING PRINCIPALS
- Maximum listening - we want to listen to the participants more than we want to tell them things. We work very closely with each partcipant.
- We don't teach, we're here to make films together.
- Encouraging independence: we have no rules as for what amatures/teenagers can or cannot do. The participants make their own choices, they film, they record, they edit, and we are always there to advice and to guide.
- Cultural differences as well as all other differences (age, background) are a source of inspiration: we try to respect the visual vision and language of the participants while giving them tools for analysing, questionning and elaborating.
Notes:
THEME: A general theme for the workshop is optional, and should stay as a recommendation only. the theme should be relevant to the participants' reality, or can be more general such as: self portrait, a letter, my preferable place...
EXPERIENCE: no previous experience is required.
FUTURE: the films will be presented publicly on the last workshop's evening. They will be sent to the OneMinutes organization in Amsterdam, will be submitted to the annual oneminutes junior competition and will become part of their archive (participants who don't want to submit their film are not obliged to).

LANGUAGE: the workshop will take place in one of the languages we speak (English, French, Hebrew, Arabic). In case the participants don't speak one of these languages, a translator should be present. We already gave workshops to participants with whom we didn't share any verbal language. Body language, images, enthusiasm and good will do the job.
PRODUCTION: in order to enable the facilitators to facilitate, they need to facilitate ONLY. All production and coordination matters of the workshop will be taken care of by a local person. This person should be fully available during the complete workshop period.
Workshop Requirements:
Duration: 7 days
Facilitators: 2
Local producer and coordinator (preferably from a local organization): 1 or 2 persons, preferably with a car and with a good attitude to teenagers. They are there to enable the facilitators and the participants to concentrate on the workshop. They will take care of meals, renting equipemet, preparing the space beforehand, fixing things that go wrong (electricity cut, missing cable...) contacting people/organizations for collaboration according to the film productions, be around when both facilitators are away, translate when necessary, etc.
